How to Program The Tera HW0002 Barcode Scanner for Front Desk Check-Ins

A barcode scanner is a device that reads barcodes and QR codes, translating them into a language that computers can understand. In this article, we will explain how to program wireless scanners.

Wireless Scanner Setup:

  1. Ensure that you fully charge the scanner.
  2. If using a laptop, plug the power supply cable into the wall socket.
  3. Connect the USB dongle to your computer to begin.
  4. Scan the following barcodes:
Reset to Factory Defaults

Power Timeout Timer Never

Communications & Pairing Barcode

  1. Check if the scanner is detected as a COM port by running the Windows Device Manager:
    • Open the Windows Control Panel or search for "device" in the Windows search bar and select Device Manager.
    • Expand the "Ports (COM & LPT)" node and check if a new "USB Serial Device" is listed. Note the COM port number, e.g., COM5.
    • If the scanner is disabled, right-click on it and select "Enable device".
  2. Add a new Serial Access Device in Insight Access using the COM port number noted in step 4 and test the scanner with a Digital Keytag:
Steps
Open Insight Access.

Go to Settings > Access Controllers.

Click the "New Device" button at the bottom.

Select "Serial Reader".

Choose the COM port of the scanner (e.g., COM5).

Click "Test".

Scan barcodes and QR codes to ensure the scanner is working properly.

Click "Save".
Click "Close" to return to the home screen.
Scan more barcodes and QR codes to test. The check-ins should appear in the column.

Wired Usage: We recommend using the scanner in wireless mode using the USB dongle as described above, and keeping it charged with the USB cable separate from your computer if possible. If the scanner is also connected by USB cable to the computer, it might automatically default to the COM port of the wired connection instead of the dongle, but only if it has previously been set up with the wired COM port. To switch it back, go to the Windows Device Manager, find and right-click to disable the wired USB device, then enable the wireless dongle.
