Programming the Zebra Handheld Check-in Scanner

You have a Zebra DS2278 handheld scanner? Nice! This quick procedure will get it set up for checking in members in Gym Insight.


1.     Connect cradle to computer with USB cable.

2.     Place scanner in the cradle.

3.     Fully charging the cradle and scanner is recommended.

4.     If any settings have been changed, scan Restore Defaults.  

5.     Open Device Manager.

6.     Scan USB CDC Host (page 8-7 in the manual).

7.     In Device Manager, Ports (COM & LPT) should appear now. Click the drop-down arrow to see which COM Port the scanner is using.

8.     Scan Add Enter Key (Carriage Return/Line Feed) (page 5-31 in the manual).

9.     Open Insight Access. Go to Settings > Access Devices > New Device > Serial Device. (For a more detailed and illustrated procedure, see our article on setting up front desk scanners.)

10.  Select the correct COM Port. Baud rate is 9600.

11.  Click Test. Scan a few barcodes to test. Numbers will appear in the box.

12. Choose a Door Name (e.g., Front Desk) and Door Type (Front Desk). Ensure Key type is Barcode.

13. Click Save. 

14. Test your keys again. If they're working, you are ready to go!
